Online grocery shopping (UK)?
Posted on November 28th, 2009 by admin
How much does Tesco charge for delivery?
Also, can I buy grocery and cds/dvds and groceries at the same time or separately?
And for those very experienced in online grocery shopping: which is better, Tesco or Sainsbury’s?
I think they are both good. Tesco delivery is £3.99 to £5.99, depending on when you want your stuff delivered, whereas Sainsbury’s is always £5.
A recent survey found the best online grocery shop was Ocado (Waitrose) but you have to spend a minimum of £40, whereas Tesco and Sainsbury’s only need a £25 minimum spend.
I’ve had a few problems where I was given the wrong product, e.g. I ordered two large blocks of cheese because they were on special offer, and only got one small block of cheese, and I’ve had a few short-dated items which have meant I’ve had to switch my week’s meal plan around but there are ways to avoid this. Obviously, if a product is out of stock they can’t deliver it, but you can tell them on the site what you would like them to subsitute it for, or they will pick something they think is OK themselves. If you aren’t happy with anything, just hand it back to the driver and you will be refunded.
I’ve found Sainsbury’s customer service really helpful and I’ve had vouchers to compensate for errors in my order and late deliveries. I didn’t have any of these problems when I used Tesco but then I only used them once so far!
Ocado were by far the best of the bunch for me – your shopping is delivered in colour-coded bags, so all your fridge stuff is together, all your freezer stuff etc. They gave the longest-dated fresh goods too and their drivers went out of their way to help you. The Tesco and Sainsbury’s staff are pleasant and helpful too.
Ultimately, I guess which one you choose is down to which sells the products you prefer and which suits your budget best. Remember that you can use and claim Nectar points shopping online with Sainbury’s, and collect Clubcard points with Tesco. I don’t think you can use the "50p off when you spend £5 on cakes" type vouchers online, but you can use your ordinary Clubcard vouchers.
The only downside to Ocado is that you can’t buy DVDs/CDs.

Tesco is between £3.99 and £5.99 depending on how quickly you want it delivered and on what day and at what time you want it delivered. You can buy pretty much everything at once, though i personally find it a bit of a nightmare to search through all the stuff to find what i want… its not as convenient as being there in the supermarket really. Plus make sure you know what sizes of the things you’re buying, so you dont end up with enormous tubs of things without realising it… Though you’re probably not as dim as me!! I’ve never used the Sainsburys one but Tescos is easy enough to use, and the delivery is always on time, and usually correct. HTH

Go to http://www.mysupermarket.com. It compares the prices of different supermarkets. You pick all your shopping and then it tells you which one’s cheaper. I think it only compares 4 supermarkets though.
